Tags aren’t just taking up room

Saumya asked “What tags do you use?” and I thought we really need to have a short discussion on what tags are…and aren’t. They really are not just wierd words taking up room on the side of our posts. They have a reason for being….

Tags are short descriptive terms with a # in front of the word.

That # is called a “hashtag” and allows many people to follow the same conversation at the same time.

Want to talk about puppies? You’d put #Puppies into a chat or blog or other social media search engine and everything about puppies would pop up from which to choose.

When blogging we use those hashtags to let others know some of the reason or content of our post.

So if I use #Blather, most people would know that it is simply a post about not much of anything sensible at all.

If you are using  ASKIMET as a means of sharing your blog online with various search engines, try to use between five and nine hashtags for each post. If you use more than 11 tags, search engines will reject the post, so take care to use a sensible number of them. Using between five and nine tags allows the search engines to easily find your posts.

Hope this helps and happy blogging!
